Co-Founder

Aug 1995 – Jan 2010

I spent 14+ years as a founder of Idealist.org, the preeminent global directory for the nonprofit sector with millions of subscribers receiving curated information about the jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities of interest to them.

In the early days I led the development of the taxonomy of the site and then ensured global representation of organizations across geography and areas of service.

As it became technically possible to build a more complex search engine my work pivoted to increasing the relevance of Idealist.org in the lives of human resources staff, career advising professionals and individual job seekers.

I led a team that created resources and events to help nonprofit job seekers, career transition professionals and organizations. For individual job seekers and career transition professionals we published a set of guides about working in the nonprofit sector for recent graduates, term of service programs and people looking to switch sectors. We also developed programs that  trained those advising job seekers how to understand the challenges of looking for work in the nonprofit sector.

To support non-profit staff and those who hoped to engage them we held hundreds of fairs around the world devoted to nonprofit careers, graduate degrees for the public good and global volunteering. Our support of nonprofit human resources professionals resulted in several national nonprofit hr conferences, nonprofit staff recruitment events, and a nonprofit human resources best practices resource center.

These programs received national recognition and were a significant part of Idealist.org growth and engagement with its organizational and individual users. The job postings and fairs have earned several hundred millions in revenue.
